It Does Not Scratch, So It Does Not Harbour
Plastic bowls develop micro-scratches with ordinary use, and those scratches hold bacteria that a wash does not shift. Stainless does not scratch, does not absorb odours, and does not react with wet or acidic food. It is the same bowl, hygienically, in year three as on day one.

A Bowl That Stays Where You Put It

Choosing, Cleaning & Cat-Specific Notes
- S — Small: the right default for most cats and the smallest toy breeds. Wide enough that whiskers do not brush the sides during normal eating posture.
- M — Medium: small to medium dog breeds, and it doubles as a water bowl for larger breeds — useful if your dog drinks a lot and you would rather refill less often.
- L — Large: the most commonly chosen size for medium-large family dogs. Holds a full meal without food reaching the rim.
- XL — Extra Large: large and giant breeds. Also used as a shared water bowl in multi-pet households to cut down on refills.
All four sizes take food or water. Many owners buy one size for food and one size up for water — it is a sensible habit.
- Whisker fatigue is a stress response caused by repeated whisker stimulation during eating. When whiskers touch the bowl sides at every meal, the overstimulation causes discomfort — and it shows up as behaviour, not as an obvious symptom.
- Watch for: reluctance to eat, pawing food out onto the floor, or eating only from the centre of the bowl and leaving the edges. Any of these is worth investigating as a bowl problem before anything else.
- A bowl wide enough that the whiskers clear the sides during normal eating posture removes the cause. The Small size suits most cats.
If your cat avoids bowls of every size, try a flat plate-style dish before assuming something else is wrong. Some cats simply prefer eating from a flat surface.
- Food bowls: wash after every meal. Wet food residue should not sit at room temperature for more than a couple of hours.
- Water bowls: rinse and refill daily, and wash thoroughly every one to two days — that is what prevents biofilm forming on the interior.
- Dishwasher: top or bottom rack, standard cycle. It is unaffected by normal temperatures and detergents, with no special settings required.
- Hand washing: warm water, standard washing-up liquid, soft sponge. Rinse thoroughly before use.
- If a slippery film develops, soak in warm water with white vinegar for 10–15 minutes, scrub with a soft brush and rinse well. That film is biofilm, and a plain rinse will not remove it.
A slippery-feeling bowl is the point at which the bowl has stopped being hygienic, whatever material it is made of. It is your signal to give it the vinegar soak.
- Food and water: all four sizes suit both. Using a size up for water is common and sensible.
- Multi-pet households: individual bowls per pet are recommended — shared bowls are where resource guarding starts.
- Rust: food-grade stainless is highly rust-resistant in normal use. Dry it after washing rather than leaving it sitting in water for long periods.
