Fill the puzzle: place kibble, dry treats or small food pieces into the puzzle compartments. Start with larger, easy-to-smell treats when introducing the toy for the first time so your dog quickly understands that food is hidden inside.
Introduce slowly: for first-time puzzle feeders, show your dog the food going in and let them investigate the toy freely. Most dogs figure out the mechanism within a few minutes — resist the urge to guide them too much, as working it out independently is the point.
Adjust portion size: the puzzle feeder replaces the bowl, not supplements it. Use the same portion you would normally feed — spread across the compartments to extend the eating time.
Cleaning: rinse with warm water after each use. Most components can be washed in warm soapy water — allow to dry fully before the next meal to prevent food residue from becoming sticky or mouldy in the compartments.

If your dog becomes frustrated or gives up quickly at Level 2, step back to Level 1 for a few weeks. Puzzle feeding is a learned skill — dogs get better at it with practice, and moving up a level too soon can create negative associations with the toy.

Start with Level 1 (Food Roulette) if: your dog has never used a puzzle feeder before, is a puppy, is easily frustrated, or is a senior dog with slower cognitive processing. The roulette mechanism is intuitive enough that most dogs solve it on the first attempt, making it a positive first experience.
Choose Level 2 (Puzzle Toy) if: your dog already uses a puzzle feeder regularly and solves it within a minute or two, is a working or herding breed with high mental drive, or consistently shows boredom behaviours despite regular exercise.
When to upgrade: if your dog consistently clears Level 1 in under two minutes, it’s time to move to Level 2. The goal is a mealtime that takes five to fifteen minutes — long enough to provide genuine mental effort and meaningful slow-feeding benefit.

Dry kibble: the most practical everyday option. Standard kibble pieces fit most puzzle compartments and flow freely without sticking. Use your dog’s usual food — no need to buy specialist puzzle treats.
Small treats: small training treats work well and increase motivation, particularly when introducing the puzzle for the first time. Use sparingly as a supplement to kibble rather than filling the entire puzzle with high-value treats.
Avoid: wet food, raw meat or anything with high moisture content — these are difficult to clean out of puzzle compartments and can harbour bacteria if residue is left to dry between meals.

The puzzle feeder is designed for dry food. Wet food is not recommended as it is difficult to clean thoroughly from the internal compartments and can lead to bacterial growth between meals.
