Pull the blanket from its pouch using the pull tabs — the tabs allow rapid deployment without needing to handle the blanket directly. In an emergency, speed of deployment matters.
Hold the blanket up in front of you with your hands behind it to protect them from heat. Approach the fire from the side where the blanket shields you.
Place the blanket over the fire source completely, covering the entire burning area. Do not fan or wave the blanket — lay it down smoothly to avoid feeding oxygen to the fire.
Leave the blanket in place for at least 15–20 minutes after the fire appears extinguished. A re-ignition risk exists while the surface beneath remains hot. Do not lift the blanket to check underneath.
Once the fire is fully out and the area has cooled, carefully remove the blanket. Do not reuse the blanket after deployment — replace it immediately.

If the fire is larger than the blanket can cover, do not attempt to smother it. Leave the area immediately, close doors behind you, and call the emergency services. A fire safety blanket is for small, contained fires only.

When in doubt, buy larger — a blanket that is too big for the fire is always better than one that cannot cover it fully. Partial coverage leaves oxygen getting to the fire and reduces suppression effectiveness significantly.

A fire safety blanket is only useful if it is immediately accessible. The most common reason people cannot use their blanket in an emergency is that they cannot reach it quickly enough. Store it where the fire is most likely to start, not where it is most convenient to keep.

A fire safety blanket is a single-use product — once deployed, it must be replaced. The glass fibre material may be compromised by heat exposure even if it appears undamaged. Do not reuse a deployed blanket.
After use, allow the blanket and the area beneath it to cool fully before handling. Wear gloves when removing the blanket — the glass fibre can irritate bare skin.
Dispose of the used blanket in general waste — it does not require specialist disposal. Replace the blanket in its storage location immediately so it is available for the next incident.
Check the blanket periodically even if unused — ensure the pouch is intact, the pull tabs are accessible, and the blanket is stored in a dry location away from direct heat sources that could degrade the material over time.
