01Soft Padded Mat — A Safe Surface from Day One

The padded mat provides a cushioned, safe surface for tummy time, rolling, and early floor play — soft enough to be comfortable on bare skin, firm enough to provide the resistance that tummy time requires for neck and core strength development. Usable from birth, it’s the foundation everything else builds on: the space where reaching, rolling, and exploring all begin.

02Support Pillow — Tummy Time Made Easier

The included pillow props the baby at a gentle angle during tummy time, reducing the effort required to lift the head and making the position more sustainable for longer sessions. Particularly useful in the early weeks when neck strength is still developing — the pillow positions the baby to engage with the hanging toys more easily, turning a developmental exercise into something engaging rather than effortful.

03Hanging Toys — Reaching, Grasping, Tracking

The hanging toys encourage reaching, grasping, and tracking moving objects — three of the most important early motor and visual development activities in the first months of life. Different textures and shapes add a tactile element that develops alongside visual and motor skills. The kind of stimulation that happens naturally when a baby is engaged with something interesting above them, without requiring effort from the parent beyond placing the baby on the mat.

04Cloth Book — Early Literacy from the Start

The cloth book introduces babies to pages, images, and tactile exploration from the earliest months — building familiarity with books long before a child can read. Soft, safe, and chewable, it’s designed for the way babies actually interact with objects at this age. The addition that makes a play mat set feel more considered than a standard gym, and adds genuine developmental value beyond motor skills alone.

In the Box1 × Baby Leaf Play Mat Gym (Mat, Pillow, Hanging Toys, Cloth Book)
  • Tummy time — placing a baby on their stomach while awake and supervised — is one of the most important early development activities recommended by paediatric health organisations. It strengthens the neck, shoulders, back, and core muscles that babies need for rolling, sitting, and eventually crawling.
  • Many babies resist tummy time in the early weeks because the position is unfamiliar and requires effort. The support pillow in this set props the baby at a gentle angle, reducing the resistance and making the position easier to sustain — which leads to longer sessions and faster muscle development.
  • The hanging toys give the baby a reason to lift their head: looking up at the toys engages neck muscles in a way that feels purposeful and interesting rather than purely effortful.
  • Start with short sessions — even 1–2 minutes several times a day — and increase gradually as strength develops. Tummy time should always be supervised and on a firm, flat surface.
Tummy time should always be done while the baby is awake and supervised. Never leave a baby unattended on their stomach — always place babies on their back to sleep.
  • 0–3 months: tummy time on the mat with the support pillow. Baby observes the hanging toys visually — tracking movement is the primary activity at this stage.
  • 3–6 months: baby begins reaching for and batting the hanging toys. Grasping reflex develops into intentional reaching. The cloth book can be introduced for tactile exploration and chewing.
  • 6–9 months: baby may begin rolling on the mat. Sitting with support becomes possible. Hanging toys can be removed for floor play if the baby is becoming more mobile.
  • 9–12 months+: the mat remains useful as a safe padded floor space for sitting, playing, and early crawling. The cloth book continues to have value as a first book for page-turning and image recognition.
Every baby develops at their own pace. The age ranges above are approximate guides based on typical developmental milestones — not fixed expectations.
  • Spot clean the mat surface with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking or submerging the mat — the padded filling requires time to dry fully and may retain moisture if saturated.
  • The hanging toys can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Remove from the mat frame before cleaning.
  • The cloth book is designed to be safe for mouthing and chewing — wipe with a damp cloth after use. Check washing instructions on the book itself before machine washing.
  • Allow all components to dry fully before reassembling and returning to use.
  • Inspect the hanging toys and their attachment points regularly for signs of wear. Remove any toy that appears damaged before allowing unsupervised access.
  • Green Leaves: a fresh, natural green palette inspired by foliage — pairs well with neutral nursery schemes and works across gender-neutral, nature-themed, and Scandi-inspired interiors. The more versatile of the two designs for gifting when nursery colour scheme is unknown.
  • Maple Leaf: a warm autumnal palette with a slightly more distinctive, seasonal character — works well in nurseries with earthy, warm, or neutral tones.
Both designs use soft, calming tones appropriate for a baby’s environment — neither is visually overstimulating, which is a consideration for a mat that will be used during winding-down periods as well as active play.
