01Freehand 3D Drawing — Build Structures in the Air

The pen extrudes heated filament that cools and solidifies within seconds — draw upward, outward, and in any direction to build three-dimensional structures without a mould or template.   • Charge the pen fully before first use using the included USB cable — a full initial charge ensures the battery is properly conditioned for the longest possible session from the start.
  • Insert a filament strand into the feed hole at the back of the pen — PLA filament is recommended for a first session as it requires a lower temperature and is more forgiving while you develop a feel for the extrusion speed.
  • Power on and allow the pen to reach the target temperature — the digital display will show the current temperature rising toward the set point. Do not attempt to extrude filament before the target temperature is reached.
  • Press the extrusion button to begin drawing — start on a flat surface to get a feel for the flow rate before attempting freehand structures in the air.
  • Practice basic flat shapes first: draw the outline of a square on paper, then lift the pen slightly to connect edges vertically — this gives you a simple three-dimensional frame to practice with before attempting more complex structures.
The nozzle becomes very hot during use. Do not touch the metal tip. Keep the pen away from young children during operation and always place it tip-up or on a heat-resistant surface when pausing.
  • PLA (Polylactic Acid): Plant-based filament that operates at a lower temperature (around 160–200°C). Easier to control, produces less fume during use, and is the recommended starting material for beginners and younger users. Cooled structures are slightly more brittle than ABS but hold fine detail well. PLA is available in a wide range of colours.
  • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): Petroleum-based filament that operates at a higher temperature (around 210–240°C). Produces stronger, more flexible structures once cooled and is better suited for pieces that need to withstand handling, bending, or heat. Use in a ventilated space as ABS produces more fumes during extrusion than PLA.
  • To switch filament types: heat the pen to the current filament’s temperature, extrude the remaining filament until the feed is clear, then reduce or increase temperature to the new filament’s setting before feeding the new strand.
Always use 1.75mm diameter filament strands. Other diameters will not feed correctly through the pen and may cause blockages.
  • Use templates: Print or draw a flat template on paper and trace over it with the pen to create precise flat components — then join the components freehand in the air to build three-dimensional structures with clean, even edges.
  • Layer for strength: Go over the same line or join multiple times to build up thickness and structural strength — a single-pass line is sufficient for decoration but a multi-pass join is much stronger for load-bearing connections.
  • Speed and temperature: Lower speed gives more control and finer detail. Higher speed covers more ground quickly but requires a steadier hand. Higher temperature produces slightly softer filament that blends joins better; lower temperature cools faster for cleaner freestanding lines.
  • Joining pieces: To join two separate components, hold them together and draw over the join point with the pen — the molten filament bonds to both sides and creates a strong connection once cooled.
  • Fixing mistakes: Wait for unwanted filament to cool completely, then peel or snap it away carefully. Warm filament is flexible; cooled filament is brittle and breaks cleanly without pulling adjacent strands.
  • Recommended for ages 8 and above with adult supervision — the nozzle reaches temperatures high enough to cause burns on contact, and young children should always be supervised by an adult during use.
